Decrease cost; increase buyer value, this leads to value innovation. Fair process allows for this to occur. Circ de Soleil created their own blue ocean based on a unique fit of drama, music, and special effects in the form of space, dance, lighting, sound, humor, sport, and theater in contrast to a dying yet honorable theme… the circus. The strategy, created by Guy Laliberté, was far from perfect but Circ de Soleil became a blue ocean. However, without fair process Laliberté could still be in Canada. He might never had the opportunity to create and cast a vision not only for his company, but also for audiences across the globe to experience. The adherence to fair process is the core of a successful Blue Ocean Platform. Kim (2005) discusses the three elements of fair process as engagement, explanation, and expectation clarity. Laliberté engaged his team of creatives by involving them in the reasoning behind what they were doing and why. In order to keep audiences more focused and involved, Laliberté did away with stagehands. Performers were tasked to fill this role of the stagehands; this led to a more seamless audience connection, and no longer a distraction. Laliberté and his leadership team were clear and expectations were set to the many shows throughout that are being performed to this day. Was the strategy to decrease cost told to the performers? Was the strategy of increasing buyer value discussed with the show staff and marketing teams? Neither of these top level strategies were discussed with his team. Although, concise, clearly explained direction was given that resulted in this Blue Ocean Platform. The proof is that directors that had gone separate way from Laliberté came back years later to work for Circ de Soleil. Laliberté implements fair process in Circ de Soleil. In a creative art field engagement with your team, through getting their input, explaining a rationale for direction and decisions, and the expectations being clear are instrumental in how the Blue Ocean platform will succeed.

My wife and I are artists showing at Canvas5. This show is in its third year and exists as an annual art premier. I was honored to be involved with Mike D. and Bobby T. (pizza at ABC’s! whut!) when they originally were brainstorming having artists feature their artwork. I am truly happy to see the success that has been had and I wish all the artists showing continued growth in their craft in the forum that Mike D. and Bobby T. have enabled for them.

This is an excerpt of their purpose statement: “Canvas exists simply to promote a community of inspiration. Our idea, our dream, was born to provide a springboard for up and coming artists, in such a way that would benefit both their craft and career.”

Also, Rob’s site design is quite sick! Support Canvas5 this year and spread the news!
http://canvas813.com Info from the canvas website below:

Canvas exists to simply promote a community of inspiration. Our idea, our dream, was born to provide a spring board for local up and coming artists, in such a way that would benefit both their craft and their career. Our desire is not to bleed the artists of their funds, it is not to exploit them for sponsorship revenue, but to let them know that there are people who care, and that we are here to help.

Canvas is the brain child of Mike DeSerio and Bobby Triplett, both of which are part of the leadership team for Element church here in the Brandon/Tampa area. The desire was to hold an event that could reach out to the art community of Tampa Bay. An event that could foster both excellence and creativity and could impact a city through the expressions of inspiration.
